Overview
Massage promotes general physical and emotional well-being but specifically addresses conditions most commonly associtated with aging.
Massage and Aging
The 'biomarkers' of aging, that can appear at any time after the age of 30 years, include a reduction in general mobility and muscular strength, slowing down of nerve conduction, reduction in the efficency of the circulatory system, loss of elasticity of tissues, thinning and drying of skin, loss of bone mass, and bones becoming more brittle, reduction in the acutenes of senses such as eyesight and hearing and reduction in the efficiency of the immune system.
These effects are experienced as general aches and pains, slower movement and less stamina and a greater tendency to develop infection. Massage reduces muscular tension, aches and stiffness by keeping muscles more pliable and increases flexibility thereby reducing the potential for injury.
It has been found that chronic stress and inactivity accelerte the aging process. Massge helps reduce the physical and mental effects of stress and anxiety. It improves sleep and increases feelings of well-being.
Massage also offers special benefits for those over 70 years. As well as providing exercise to maintain flexibility and strength needed to do the activities of daily living, reducing stress, increasing cirucaltion and efficiency of the immune system, it also improves digestion and elimination, eases the various emotional pains such as loss, frustration and fear and offers an avenue for social interaction that reduces feelings of social isolation.
A regular programme of massage will contribute to the lifelong wellness of everyone, whatever their age.
