The Active Generation

Fifty maybe the new 30 but the baby boomers haven't heard the news!

Sports Related Injuries

Baby boomers participated in the running craze of the '70s, the aerobics craze of the '80s, the yoga craze of the '90s and now continue with the Zumba craze of the 2000s.  Unfortunately, although this generation won't stop being active, their bodies are getting older.  Although you may say that age is a state of mind, it's quite positively also a state of the body.  Your head may be telling you you feel 30 years old but, whey hey, those joints, ligaments and muscles have endured nay suffered years of wear and tear and they really are feeling your true age!

Those born between 1946 and 1964 may well be active but they're also more prone to injury.  There is now developing a tidal wave of exercise related injuries, such as bursitis, tendinitis, arthritis, sprains, strains and stress fractures which was originially labelled 'boomeritis' by Dr N A DiNubile an orthopedic surgeon at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1999.  In 2003 gym and sports related injuries in members of this age group were the second most frequent reasons for visiting a doctor in the UK, second to the common cold that is!

Whilst massage can't repair serious injuries it can help ward them off.  Massage is a good way to keep the body in good working order.

Massage helps keep the body stay flexible, it helps muscles to relax around an injury and so reduces the time to recover and also helps maintain the efficient working of the immune system to reduce the susceptibilty to infection.  In essence massage helps minimise symptoms, speeds the recovery of injuries and prevents new ones.
